Walking Together – An Indigenous Approach to OSP

Mental wellness is deeply rooted in Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community. At Maamwesying the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program, aims to create an approach that respects and embraces Indigenous ways of knowing.

Our Commitment

For generations, Indigenous People have faced barriers to equitable, culturally safe mental health care. To foster inclusivity, the provincial government, Health Sciences North (HSN), and Service Delivery Sites (SDSs) within the northeast are working together to embed regional Indigenous approaches into OSP. By centering Indigenous voices, values, and strengths, we are committed to reshaping the system into one that truly supports Indigenous Peoples mental wellness.

Two-Eyed Seeing Approach

Through ongoing conversations and partnerships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community leaders, and those with lived experience, a path forward will be shaped that reflects the wisdom, resilience, and traditions of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit Nations within the northeast. This collaborative approach honors the values and perspectives of Indigenous People. Our goal is to ensure Indigenous People can access care that is safe, welcoming and aligned with their values and teachings. As we walk this path together, we remain committed to learning, growing, and adapting to better serve Indigenous People.

Our Guiding Principles

On this journey, we are committed to:

  • Co-creating culturally safe pathways that honor Indigenous approaches to healing and wellness.
  • Building and sustaining meaningful relationships based on trust, respect and repair of past harms.
  • Promoting education and anti-racism, acknowledging the impact of colonial policies and practices on Indigenous health and wellness, and working to dismantle systemic barriers.

Together, we are walking toward a future where Indigenous mental wellness is nurtured in a space of respect, understanding, and cultural safety.

If you or someone you know needs mental health support, our team is here to provide information, answer questions, and connect you with the care you need.
