Naandwe Noojimowin

Aanii, Bozho, Hello

Miigwech for your interest in the Naandwe Noojimowin Program.

The Mental Wellness, Minobimaadizing Program at Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services began offering the Naandwe Noojimowin Program in April 2016.

This program originates from the Southcentral Foundation, an Alaska Native-owned, nonprofit health care organization located in Anchorage Alaska. In 2013, Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services led the three-year training project to bring the Beauty for Ashes program to our communities. From the beginning our goal was to slowly make this program “our own” by adding Anishnaabe teachings and renaming the program in the language…a move supported by one of our organizational strategic aims, “A Shift to Traditional Practices.”

In 2016 we began meeting with traditional knowledge carriers and language speakers from along the North Shore, to identify cultural content for the program curriculum and an Anishnnabe name for the program. In 2017 we introduced the new program workbook and changed our program name from Beauty from Ashes to, Naandwe Noojimowin which translates to “Assisting in the Healing Movement toward the Good Life,”

The Good Life is a translation from the word, Mno bimaadziwin which translates to the Red Road / Good Life Creator gave to us. The good life concept describes how we live in balance and harmony with one another, and All our Relatives within Creation.

The Naandwe Noojimowin program centers on SELF DISCOVERY. Participants gain insight into personal behaviours, they learn about relational styles and where they originate, and they gain tools to improve communication and relationships. The end result is that participants gain knowledge of themselves and tools to help build healthier relationships with self, family and community….hence “Naandwe Noojimowin.”
